Unraid OS is not a subscription. Once you purchase a license, you own it forever.

Starter and Unleashed licenses include one free year of software updates with purchase. After one year, customers can pay an optional extension fee (just $36 for the year), making them eligible for another year of updates.

Lifetime licenses include free updates for life.

If you choose not to extend your license, no problem. You still own the license and have full access to the OS—you simply will not be eligible for future updates unless or until you pay the extension fee. There will be no penalty for extending your license at a later date, other than it being subject to the current published extension price. 

Trial licenses last 30 days and provide the full functionality of an Unraid Unleashed license with unlimited attached storage devices.

Attached storage devices refer to the total number of storage devices you are allowed to have connected to the server before starting the array, not counting the USB Flash boot device.

There are no other limitations in the software based on the license type. Non-storage devices such as GPUs do not count against the license tier limits.

Unraid OS boots from a USB flash-based storage device.

Other boot devices, such as SD card readers, HDDs, or SSDs, are not currently supported.

You can manually transfer your license to a new USB Flash device at any time up to once per year. After that, contact support.

No. After an Unraid license is purchased, no internet connection is required unless you are updating the OS or downloading apps, containers or plugins.

When you purchase a Starter or Unleashed License, you automatically get a free year of Unraid OS updates. 

If you choose to not extend your license, you still own a copy of the software at the current version that was available at the time of the lapse, but your update eligibility changes. 

If your license extension has lapsed, you can download patch releases within the same minor OS version that was available to you at the time of the lapse. 

For example: Your system is eligible for Unraid 7.1.0 when your extension lapses. You qualify for the remaining patch releases of the Unraid 7.1.x series. Once Unraid 7.2.0 is released, the 7.1.x patch releases will only include security patches. Once Unraid 7.3 is released, version 7.1.0 will be EOL, and there will be no more 7.1.x updates.

Our naming convention for releases is: <major>.<minor>.<patch>.
