Surprising PSU Efficiency Findings

One of the unexpected discoveries during testing was the efficiency of different power supply unit (PSU) ratings. Conventional wisdom suggests that Platinum-rated PSUs are the most efficient, but real-world testing revealed otherwise for this build. The Corsair RM650 Gold PSU consistently outperformed both new and older Platinum-rated models at low power draws. With all drives spun down, the server idled at just 21-23 watts, demonstrating that a high-efficiency Gold-rated PSU can be a better choice for low-power servers over more expensive Platinum-rated ones.

HDD vs. SSD Efficiency Showdown

A direct comparison between mechanical hard drives and SSDs provided further insights into efficiency. SSDs consumed slightly less total system power (17-19W vs. 22W with spun-down HDDs), but HDDs gained an edge by fully powering down when inactive and allowing for much more storage capacity than SSDs.  This means that for workloads with intermittent access, mechanical drives may actually be more power-efficient due to their ability to fully power down when inactive on top of offering more storage capacity.

Real-World Power Usage & Workload Testing

To understand real-world power demands, several workloads were tested:

  • Idle state (drives spun down): 20-25 watts
  • All HDDs spun up but idle: ~47 watts
  • Parity sync (high disk usage): 60-63 watts
  • All Drives Up with transcoding + parity Sync: ~70 watts

Even under peak workloads, this 90TB Unraid server remained remarkably power-efficient compared to traditional setups that often consume hundreds of watts.

Annual Power Cost Breakdown
