Unraid Community Rockstars JorgeB and ich777

Community Rockstars Blog

One of the main reasons why the Unraid community is so great is due to our many Community Rockstars who go above and beyond to help others out. 🤘

In this blog series, we want to put a spotlight on key community members to get to know them a little better and recognize them for all that they've done for the Unraid community over the years.

This next blog features two outstanding community members who have helped out countless new Unraid users over the years.

How did you discover Unraid originally?

I remember that I was looking for a replacement for a 4 port RAID5 controller I was using with Windows, wasn't happy with the reliability/flexibility and the fact that there was always the risk I could easily lose the entire pool, It's been almost 15 years, don't remember exactly how I found about it, but I believe an event photographer friend first mentioned Unraid to me, that or I found Unraid online and told him about it, since he's also a longtime user.

What do you like most about being a part of this community?

Being part of a friendly and knowledgeable community, especially happy that with all the Unraid growth in last years the forums still remain a very friendly and informative place, also like that I keep learning new things every day.

What is your most liked feature of Unraid?

When I started using Unraid it was a basic NAS solution, what attracted me initially was the possibility of using the full capacity with different size disks and that each disk was an individual file system, so easier to recover most data even if there was a major issue or a multiple drive failure.

Now Unraid is much more than that, the ability to run dockers and VMs is also very important to me.

What feature would you most like to see added to Unraid?

TRIM support for SSDs in the array.

How did you discover Unraid originally?

Discovered Unraid by accident by stumbling over on one of LTTs videos and at that time I've had a Dual CPU Xeon System with two 1080s and I thought, well why use one computer when I can have two computers in one and it worked out great!

Then I began quickly to switch over to my Server that was running at the time Windows Server 2012R2 Essentials to Unraid and was blown away by the gain in performance, also HDD space with Unraid's somewhat unique storage Array and of course that it consumes way less power than my Windows Server.

What do you like most about being a part of this community?

Being part of a really vibrant and non toxic community on a forum is trivial to me these days because like @JonathanM already mentioned too many forums/platforms nowadays have toxic people on it that destroys the whole climate of the forum.

Also the Unraid community is really quick (if not one of the quickest that I've seen so far) in terms of answering to threads, regardless if you are a newbie or a long time forum member.

What is your most liked feature of Unraid?

It's unique storage system, scalability and its unique implementation of Docker container/templates and the CA App.

What feature would you most like to see added to Unraid?

Multiple Arrays (XFS) would be a real benefit for me to split up my Array, to use my older spare drives in a smaller Array and to make use of ZFS in Cache pools.
